One thing that I'm not sure has been pointed out -- while Michael's last name (Cross) has been pointed out to potentially be significant due to its religious connotation, what about the name Michael...

Think about it - tries to keep to himself at nearly all costs, avoids even mentioning his parents as much possible
What if it's a combination of the two ideas? i.e Tanya's line has some level of resistance/immunity, but would still be at risk of turning when bit without the kickass antibiotics.
